Shanghai has applied autonomous driving technologies in some certain scenarios, largely for commercial use, such as intelligent valet parking, self-driving logistics delivery in industrial park, vehicle self-charging, etc., according to local media.
In March this year, SAIC Motor and NIO got the China's first batch of licenses that allow them to test ICVs (intelligent-connected vehicle) on public roads. In the past three months, the road tests have been conducted under safe control without any collision or serious traffic accidents happened. In the near future, the total length of open road for test will extended to 12km from 5.6km, adding several new road sections with more abundant testing scenarios.
By the end of this year, the open road for test will be lengthened to 47km, involving a total of 58 intersections, according to Chen Hailin, general manager of Shanghai International Automobile City. Besides, autonomous trucks and sanitation vehicles are expected to be used in some certain scenarios like port.
Currently, autonomous vehicles can only be tested or used with some limitations on range, speed and scenarios, etc. Finding the proper scenario is especially important to accomplish the application of this emerging technology. “Highway” and “low speed” are two key words when the industry describes the scenarios that testing companies mostly favor. Highways have rather simple transportation environment with few pedestrian, traffic light and turning. It makes it earlier for the driving system to judge and analyze data when the vehicle is running. In addition, at a "low speed", a vehicle will have more time to analyze and judge the information from the surroundings and handle the interaction with vehicles, pedestrians or non-motorized conveyances. Apart from that, these scenarios require relatively plain infrastructures in terms of intelligentization.
Some automakers has currently explored the application in "highway" and "low speed" scenarios, for example, autonomous minibus has run in some industrial parks in Jiading District and autonomous trucks have been put into use in Yangshan Port.
