China’s power battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) has signed a cooperation agreement with Volvo Cars to supply electric car batteries for the latter’s next-generation EVs and Polestar cars, CATL announced on May 15.
According to the agreement, CATL is about to provide its battery modules for the carmaker’s yet-to-be-launched SPA2 vehicle development platform and the CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform, a global mid-size unibody automobile platform jointly developed by Volvo and Geely.
Volvo Cars said CATL is an internationally well-known power battery producer boasting long-term and successful experience in teaming up with global automakers. It is able to satisfy Volvo Cars’s strict procurement standards by virtue of its cutting-edge technologies, responsible supply chain and competitive cost model.
In a bid to build a more efficient communication channel and more timely response mechanism, CATL will dispatch a team to Sweden to provide local services there. In addition, the battery maker will comply with Volvo’s strategic requirements over sustainable development by using clean energy to produce batteries. It will manage to track raw materials across the entire supply chain, aiming to help the carmaker partner improve the operation efficiency, sustainability and transparency of supply chain management.
Based on the agreed planning, CATL’s overseas plants will offer part of capacity to support the deal’s required production.
