On October 24, the fourth model of BYD's e series, the BYD e3, officially hit the market following the e1, the S2 and the e2. Offered in three variants, the new BEV model is priced between RMB103,800 and RMB119,800 after green-car subsidies.
Something you should know before we start describing this new model. The e3, positioned as an economic all-electric sedan, is built on BYD “e” platform. At the first glance of the car, you will notice its much resemblance to the e2, whereas the e2 is a hatchback instead of a sedan.
The hexagonal grille embedded with multiple regularly-arranged spots is part of features of BYD e series' typical “Crystal Energy” design language. Above the grille is the chrome lip which is seamlessly flanked by the slender LED headlights, accentuating the car’s width.
On the inside, the sedan gets a 10.1-inch rotatable screen running on BYD’s DiLink2.0 intelligent network system and a rotary gear selector.
Powering the e3 is a permanent magnet synchronous motor independently developed by BYD. Two ranges will be offered based on the battery capacity—the 305-km range is the result from a 35.2kWh battery pack, while the 47.3kWh battery is the power source of the variant with 405-km range.
Thanks to the lightweight body design and the coupe-level drag coefficient of 0.28Cd, the e3 is able to sprint from 0 to 50km/h within only 3.9 seconds.
