January 20, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) local time Thursday said that there is no evidence that occurred in Florida in May the death of Tesla accident caused by the autopilot system. This "acquittal" eliminates potential obstacles to the development of autopilot technology.
According to Reuters, the car accident victim Joshua Brown (Joshua Brown) in driving Tesla Model S and enable semi-automatic driving mode when a car accident killed. In July, NHTSA survey found that Brown's car at 74mph speed at 65mph speed limit on the road, and the day of the incident was fine weather, good visibility.
Ideally, the autopilot system can travel autonomously along the road with minimum driver involvement, maintain distance from other vehicles and automatically change lanes as appropriate. However, some owners were photographed excessive use of autopilot technology, and thus inevitably lead to accidents due to negligence.
This led Tesla to tighten its restrictions on autopilot technology and temporarily disable autopilot if the driver did not respond to the warning. In addition, the updated version of the Model has been upgraded with better sensors, processors and software. After Tesla completes the test and development, theoretically should be able to achieve fully automatic driving.
If the NHTSA declares Tesla defective to be recalled, it will not only be Tesla, but also many auto-related companies. The recall may lead to a reassessment of security measures, and NHSTA may introduce new regulations accordingly.
