Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, said in his Twitter, Tesla may establish a new factory in India, which is currently negotiating with the Indian government to raise taxes on vehicle imports.
Earlier this year, Muske had said Tesla would launch a new car in India in the summer, but in May he pointed out that Tesla was not ready for India's production policy. Masky's Twitter content surprised investors and potential consumers. He said Tesla was in talks with India to temporarily reduce import restrictions before establishing a new plant. At present, India's tax on imported cars can be as high as 100%, depending on the different value of the model.
After the establishment of factories in India, Tesla can be exempt from such heavy taxes. GM and Ford and other car manufacturers have assembled plants in India, but GM recently announced the Indian factory to export to other markets to the center.
Last week at the Tesla annual shareholders meeting, Masky said that to meet the demand, may need to build 10-20 new factories. India is likely to be the main market for Tesla, which is expected to become the world's third largest new car market. It is reported that the Indian government plans to sell electric cars only in India by 2030.
